The Oral History Project

Event Details:  Morna Gerrard is the archivist for Women’s/Gender and Sexuality Collections at Georgia State University. In this role, she collects, preserves, and makes available the records and oral histories of women and the LGBTQ+ communities in Atlanta, Georgia, and the South.

A native of Scotland, Morna was educated at Edinburgh University, Western Washington University, and Clark Atlanta University. She is a fellow and past president of the Society of Georgia Archivists, and a long-time board member of the Georgia Archives Institute, She is also a past vice president and current member of the Georgia LGBTQ History Project (now the Rainbow History Project). Morna has served the community in a variety of ways: For10 years, she was a member of the LGBTQ Institute (Now Rustin Institute) Advisory Board; she served on the advisory board of the Historic Atlanta LGBTQ HPAC, as it worked toward producing the city's LGBTQ Historic Context Statement; she was a member of the AFCRA LGBTQ Community Center Exploratory Committee and she is currently on the Community Center's newly-formed Steering Committee. 

Among Morna’s published works are book chapters, “No Fame Required: Collaboration, Community, and the Georgia LGBTQ Archives Project,” in Appraisal and Acquisition: Innovative Practices and Special Collections, “Silenced Voices Lesson Plan” and “Exploring Gender Roles in Society, Literature and Film,” in Gender Studies in the Library: Case Studies, Programming, Outreach, “Collective Invention: Learning Through Women’s Activism and Material Culture,” in Students in the Archives: Archival Pedagogy in Practice, and "In Archives and In Health: Pushing and Evolving Collaborative Boundaries Through Times of Change” in How to Work with Academic Faculty: Partnerships, Collaborations. She also wrote an article, “ACTing UP Down South,” in Alexander Street Press’s Women and Social Movements in the U.S., 1600-Present electronic journal.  

Morna lives in Decatur with her husband and two cats.

Reservations: Not required but appreciated for accurate food and drink count.

Parking: There is ample parking in the BUMC side lot.  Turn from North Druid Hills onto Briarwood Road and then into the parking lot. 

If you have mobility concerns, park in the reserved spaces on North Druid Hills on the side of the church and then proceed up the walkway to the white doors below the steeple.
