    Event Details:  When Margaret “Peggy” Mitchell lived in the building with her second husband, John Marsh, they lived in a small apartment on the first floor. Mitchell nicknamed apartment no. 1 “The Dump.”

    Shortly after moving into the apartment in 1925, Mitchell quit her job as a reporter at the Atlanta Journal, primarily because of a re-aggravation of a foot injury she suffered as a child. While recuperating, she would plow through library books that Marsh would bring her. As the story goes, one day he came home from the library empty-handed, claiming that she had read all the library’s works of fiction, and suggested that she start writing something instead. Mitchell’s first and only book was born: Gone With the Wind.

    Both beloved and condemned from almost the moment of its publication, Gone With the Wind went on to shape the way that millions of people imagined the American Civil War for decades to come. Both the book and the movie depict a rosy myth of the Old South, casting the institution of slavery in a benevolent light. African Americans characters are also characterized as simple-minded and beholden to the white characters, most of whom are slaveholders (or, by the end of the story, former slaveholders). Overall, the story also ignores the role of slavery in causing the Civil War, playing into Lost Cause mythology, among many other issues. These depictions are, however, hugely influential, and provide a case study of how narrative, art, and film can affect our view of history.

    Explore the complex issues raised by Gone With the Wind and by Mitchell’s life as well as  the popularity along with criticism of the book and film.

    Event Details:  Morna Gerrard is the archivist for Women’s/Gender and Sexuality Collections at Georgia State University. In this role, she collects, preserves, and makes available the records and oral histories of women and the LGBTQ+ communities in Atlanta, Georgia, and the South.

    A native of Scotland, Morna was educated at Edinburgh University, Western Washington University, and Clark Atlanta University. She is a fellow and past president of the Society of Georgia Archivists, and a long-time board member of the Georgia Archives Institute, She is also a past vice president and current member of the Georgia LGBTQ History Project (now the Rainbow History Project). Morna has served the community in a variety of ways: For10 years, she was a member of the LGBTQ Institute (Now Rustin Institute) Advisory Board; she served on the advisory board of the Historic Atlanta LGBTQ HPAC, as it worked toward producing the city's LGBTQ Historic Context Statement; she was a member of the AFCRA LGBTQ Community Center Exploratory Committee and she is currently on the Community Center's newly-formed Steering Committee. 

    Among Morna’s published works are book chapters, “No Fame Required: Collaboration, Community, and the Georgia LGBTQ Archives Project,” in Appraisal and Acquisition: Innovative Practices and Special Collections, “Silenced Voices Lesson Plan” and “Exploring Gender Roles in Society, Literature and Film,” in Gender Studies in the Library: Case Studies, Programming, Outreach, “Collective Invention: Learning Through Women’s Activism and Material Culture,” in Students in the Archives: Archival Pedagogy in Practice, and "In Archives and In Health: Pushing and Evolving Collaborative Boundaries Through Times of Change” in How to Work with Academic Faculty: Partnerships, Collaborations. She also wrote an article, “ACTing UP Down South,” in Alexander Street Press’s Women and Social Movements in the U.S., 1600-Present electronic journal.  

    Morna lives in Decatur with her husband and two cats.

    Seating is assigned for this production, and you’ll be able to select your seat(s) within the APT block of seats during the checkout process.

    Parking: Some free parking is available in the Ansley Park neighborhood.  Pay attention to the parking signs because they will indicate where and when free parking is available.     Event Details:  Lullwater Preserve lies at the heart of Emory University's campus. The 154 acre preserve contains the home of the University's President, the beautiful Candler Lake, a 210-foot suspension bridge, acres of green space, and miles of walking and jogging trails. Lullwater is the perfect place to experience nature in the city with many species of mammals, reptiles, birds, and lush greenery.


    We will hike for approximately 2-2.5 miles starting and ending on the South Peachtree Creek Trail that is near the Central Dekalb Senior Center and the DeKalb Tennis Center. There is a restroom available at the tennis center and plenty of free parking.


    Following the hike at approximately 12:45 p.m. we will go to Athens Pizza for an optional lunch. 

    Directions: Take McConnell Drive past the senior center to the end; then, at the "T" intersection turn left and park.

    What to Bring:  You may wish to bring water, snacks, sunscreen, hat, and bug spray on the hike.

    Event Details:   Join a 1.5-mile walk on the Atlanta Beltline from Ansley Mall to Piedmont Park and back.   We will meet at 11:00am at the main entrance to Lewis BBQ to access a new bridge to the Beltline.  After the walk there will be an optional lunch at Lewis BBQ.


    As you know, the national mid-term elections are also scheduled for November 03 this year. It is an important election, and everyone’s vote is vital! Some people have been feeling quite anxious about the outcome of various races in this election. The early voting period starts October 13 and ends October 30. So, whether you vote during the early voting period or plan to vote early on Election Day, please come join us for a friendly walk to calm your jittery nerves.

    What to Bring:  You may wish to bring water, snacks, sunscreen, hat, and bug spray on the hike.

    It’s the time of year when we seek new talent to volunteer to serve on the  Atlanta Prime Timers Board of Directors. There are a total of nine positions on the Board to be elected by the membership in attendance at the November monthly meeting.

    The Board spearheads social, educational, and volunteer activities and manages the expenses of the organization. Over the years we have developed a chapter with fun activities to keep our members engaged. We are a great social organization that cares about our members, and we are asking you to share your organizational talents to lead APT to new heights in 2026.

    If you are not able to attend the September or October monthly meeting and fill out an "interest card,"  you can indicate your interest to serve on the Board by clicking the registration button.   A member of the Board will contact you to answer any questions you may have.
